The intersection of 156 Street and Stony Plain Road is seen in the centre of this aerial photo dating from 1943.

At the time, the area was known as West Jasper Place, which was administered as part of the Municipal District of Stony Plain No. 519 between 1913 and 1942. The jurisdiction changed to the Municipal District of Spruce Grove No. 519 from 1942 to 1949.

Visible from east to west: the M.D. Muttart Lumber Yards in the 154 Street block; the Central School buildings south of Stony Plain Road east of 156 Street; Hi Way Service Station and James Wright’s grocery to the east of the school. Note the forested and farm areas.

The corner of 156 Street and Stony Plain Road on April 27, 1950.

On December 29, 1949, the area between 149 Street and 170 Street was Incorporated as the Village of West Jasper Place. On November 6, 1950, it became the Town of Jasper Place

Shows the southeast corner of Stony Plain Road looking east from 156 Street. Central School is in the background; the businesses, west to east: Southern Fried Chicken (15545), owned by Nellie Goward who went on to run Nellie’s Southern Chicken further west; Horan’s Hardware (15539); Al’s Barber Shop (15535); and Hep’s Dine & Dance (15527).

November 3rd, 2020

Don Bouzek of the Jasper Place Community History Project took the following photos on this date to document the buildings at the corner of 156 Street and Stony Plain Road that would be soon removed due to the construction of the Valley Line West LRT.
