An Evening with Edmonton’s Historian Laureate

Event celebrates Black history in Jasper Place

Edmonton’s Historian Laureate, Donna Coombs-Montrose, led an evening at the Jasper Place Edmonton Public Library for Black History Month on February 17th, 2026. Specifically, the topic was the Black history of the Jasper Place area. Several people featured on the Jasper Place Community History Project’s website were in attendance for a lively discussion about their families and stories, including Stennie Noel, Shirley Romany, Irma Belton, and Constance Thomas.

The Jasper Place Community History Project’s banners were also on display (and were for the entire month of February), with the one about Black History featured in the presentation room.

EPL also set up some displays of books pertaining to local Black history, and a display case of photos and other artifacts.

Despite a snowstorm and extreme cold temperatures, the attendance was good and the audience had a lot of fun taking part in a quiz to test their knowledge about what they had heard. Many thanks to the Jasper Place EPL for hosting the event!
